Users Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using these treatments need to be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
